Running SUCKS – & WHY this matters to your Business

My goal with today’s post is to take some pressure off you.

Working a business and feeling frustrated and angry isn’t going to get you anywhere; It’s time to take the pressure off and realize that creating a business, whether online or off, takes time.

I just learned this lesson recently thanks to my latest sport – running.

5 weeks ago, I felt like the wheels were going to come shooting off my life if I didn’t do something quickly. Winter lasted forever and I fell off my fitness regime.

I felt myself becoming more and more grumpy. I was thinking maybe I needed to quit my job … quit my business … sell my house and move. (Have you ever felt that way?)

Before I made such a drastic change I decided to change one thing in my life—exercise HAD to become a priority – (even though in the summer I am active with cycling).

My wife and I started running. We picked a 5km race (3 miles) as a goal and started training.
YOU WILL be SHOCKED to know that after my first 5km run I didn’t lose any weight! Can you imagine that??? I read about running. I bought new shoes. I mapped out a course and I ran (walked) for 46 minutes!

Yet I saw no change in the mirror and the scale never moved.

Honestly, I worked my ass off but I thought: Well, maybe I did something wrong. So, after a couple of days rest I went out and did another 5km. This time it took me only 45 minutes. Surely, I would see success now!

I got on the scale … Nothing had changed.

Seriously. What the hell???

I ran twice and there is NO change!

PLUS, my knees hurt soooo bad. I called a running coach and ranted about how stupid running is and how it doesn’t work!

She gave me a plan; an app to start tracking food and a running plan.

So, I started tracking my food with a handy app. I was shocked at the amount of calories I was eating. I made more changes. Now I am eating some fruits and veggies (my wife is shocked because I would maybe eat 5 fruits and veggies a week never mind a day) … and I am trying to keep my calories under 2100 a day.

This weekend I did my 13th run and finished the 5km without stopping—in 31 minutes. And you might not be surprised to know the scale numbers have gone down too. PLUS, a bonus: for the first time in years my blood pressure is where it is supposed to be. 128/81.
What is the lesson here?

If you want to be a success in anything including becoming a PR wizard and book yourself on media everywhere – you are going to fail. You are going to see ZERO results for your effort.
You might have a great story that can help and inspire many – but then you send out a few media releases and don’t see any traction so you quit and say this doesn’t work.

3 main learning points

Don’t quit. Just take a break. Have a pity party! Walk away for a week. Put your business on hold. You will be amazed at the clarity you receive when you stop working in your business.

Get an accountability partner. My wife cheers me on when I feel I need to walk for a bit while running…or I encourage her.

If you need advice – find the expert who can help you without sucking huge bucks out of your bank account. (If you are an internet marketer, social media wiz, online coach, whomever…you are not worth $1000/hour – no matter who you are – that price is reserved for lawyers and doctors!)

Well now that I have offended a few people who charge $1000 an hour, I think I’ll lace up the running shoes. The 5km race is coming up May 14th and I want to get a bit faster by then.
