PR Tip of the week – Miley Cyrus

Today’s PR tip of the week: Should we tip for takeout or not? This is a great topic for etiquette experts…I can almost guarantee you will get interviews by using Miley Cyrus as your headline this week.

The story is…
Miley Cyrus is catching heat after reportedly failing to leave a tip at the Outback Steakhouse in Burbank, California. Sources told the New York Daily News that that after ordering $70 worth of steak and mac and cheese for herself and sister Brandi, the 16-year-old superstar pocketed the change from a $100 bill she used to pay. Cyrus's spokesperson addressed the incident, telling the Daily News, "She didn't know she was supposed to tip unless she was eating inside."
I did a poll this morning, and my listeners were divided…what do you think??? Leave a comment.

I think the real story is the lack of confidentiality on the restaurant and the server's part. You can guarantee that high-profile eaters won't heading back to that restaurant anytime soon. Thanks for the good stuff Wayne!
Hello Wayne,
Tiping is optional in all cases. We have created a tipping culture that says that we are obligated to tip. This is why our wsitstaff have a sales job and not a service job. When I was in the restaurant industry we even took courses on how to 'up sell' the customer to make the bill larger and of course the optionally obligatory 20% tip.
Beliefs are powerful and Tribial Beliefs are more powerful because if you don't go along with the tribes view or way then you will be shunned or your flame will be put out and voted of the island. Tribal beliefs can really effect us in so many ways. In this case the tribe says you should or you shouldn't tip. It all comes down to making up your own beliefs about what is 'right/wrong'.
I have tipped and not tipped for take out in the past. I just don't listen to others and move forward with my life. Let Myley find her way in life yet I'm cetain the free publicity is going to be welcomed by her PR team.
With Lots of Love and Gratitude,

Wendy,
Great point…I missed that…they lost a customer!
Thanks

Hey there Wayne!
I think Miley needs to get some new PR people and read up on her etiquette. You'd have to be living under a rock to not know that you have to leave a tip after ordering a meal in a restaurant, especially in this economy. Yes. You do leave a tip for takeout. After all, the people who serve and prepare the food are still working on your behalf, even though they are not bringing it to your table. Their efforts should be appreciated and rewarded with a tip.
Nowadays people are more reliant than ever upon tips. Shame on Miley for not being more sensitive to the whole concept of being grateful. I understand that the word "Tip" is an acronym for "To insure profit." I guess in Miley's case, the only profit she was seeking to ensure was her own.
It's a sad state of affairs to think that a superstar such as her caliber lives in such a scarcity mentality– that move was definitely not a good role model for kids!
Wayne,
What’s the world coming too, when we lose all sense of right and wrong and prospective goes out of the window, most fast-food franchises cost over $700,000.00 just for the licence and that’s before the owner invests in the site and infrastructure, why? Because they make so much money, they are a gold mines, that’s why, but the staff who work there butts off to make this profit for the owner, get less than peanuts and have to rely on handouts (tips)
Lets remember the reason for tipping in the first place, we should only give a tips when the service from the staff is outstanding and that tip should reflect the service provided over and above what we would consider was covered by there normal wage under there job specification.
Tipping the staff when you buy a takeaway is simple ludicrous, just because we feel that it’s our duty to subsidise the staffs wages and put even more profit in the owners pocket, we are just supporting the low wages that we find in all our service industries, which I feel is close to slave labor.

Wayne, it is sad that a person or store believes that no service requires a tip. Mylie Cyrus was correct in not leaving a tip for a pick up. I don't either. The restaurant is in the business of providing food and preparing it for pickup, as a matter of fact, the person picking up the food is required to go into the area, wait in line and pay for the food. The restaurant if it is wise is glad that the customer appreciates the food enough to do so.
We have been trained by the restaurants to tip the serving staff and the tip depends on the type of service that is given and the amount of time spent at the table. I double tip the bill if I have stayed at the table for a turn of customers. I appreciate the opportunity to do business or visit with friends. There is a time honored protocol for that. The restaurant that Mylie Cyrus visited will probably never see her again. Someone violated the unspoken rule not to complain about a customer. I know I would not return.
I am not sure why the critics don't love miley's latest song – I think it is groovy.
