50 minutes later we arrived at Pulpit Rock above Nelson
BC. My daughter takes in the view...my son is trying to get the heck out
of the pic...but I caught him anyway!

1 - The Most overlooked
Free Publicity on the Planet
I
was asked by a marketing wiz to write for a new PR book about what most
authors need to know when releasing their new book.
Ummm….
Then it
hit me…tell your local media about what you are doing!
Please
don’t overlook the easiest opportunity to promote your book…LOCAL
media. The day you release your book, you should be making the circuit…Morning
Radio Show, Noon-hour local cable show, Newspaper interviews, and ending
off with a book signing at your favorite book store. Even the smallest
towns have a media that is looking for local stories. The mandate of
smaller market stations is to promote local people. You would be shocked
at the number of local books that I would have loved to feature on my
radio show…but never knew anything about them…until it was
too late to help promote them.
2 - Karate and
Road Biking improved my Business!
I
don’t know if you can use this for publicity or not, but I have
started doing some new things and I can’t believe how great it
feels. For years I’ve been mountain biking but I recently took
the plunge and switched to road riding. Last year when I started on
a loaner bike, I listened to my ipod. But this year I listen to: the
sound of traffic, wind, nature, and heavy gasping and breathing as I
try to conquer some of BC's tremendous hills. For all you cycle nuts,
I just bought a full Carbon Fiber Specialized Roubaix Road Bike...WOW!
My second
stretch is Karate. Yes, at 38 I have taken up this sport and find it
to be an incredible workout! The best part is...while I'm in class I
don’t think about anything from my stressfull life. I simply focus
on breathing, kicks, punches, pushups...and more jumping jacks per session
than I have ever done in my entire life!
So what
did I learn from these newfound activities?
Don’t
be afraid to start something new. If I can enjoy these 2 sports so much,
I have to ask myself, "What else am I missing out on?" Luckily
my eyes have been opened before it's too late! (If you have a sport
or something you love…please let me know what it is…)

Never EVER use this word in your Subject Line
Any subject line
with the word “author” will almost always get deleted…The
media doesn’t want to talk to boring authors who are just trying
to sell books. The media wants to talk with experts! The best of the
best! The next big thing! By the way, this dawned on me this morning
when I deleted an email without even opening it at the radio station.
And as I was deleteing it I asked myself, "Why am I deleteing
this without even looking at it?" Unconsciously I had scanned
the subject line and had seen “author”. So unless the
word author is surrounded by: Harry Potter or Stephen King, don’t
use it!
I don’t
say this as an insult to authors, but I am here to tell you truth
about what’s on the minds of 99% of the radio producers out
there -- Speak their language and you will get their attention. Speak
author lingo and you’ll never hear from anyone.

Oh,
stop groaning and whining and saying you hate Rocky! The words he
speaks to his son are more powerful than even the greatest motivational
Guru. This goes out to all of us who have pity parties regularly for
whatever reason.

pointing fingers and blaming....Watch this!!!
