<itunes:summary>LISTEN TO THE PODCAST

1. Who Has more free time? You or Lady Gaga?
I always want to share real tips that get you publicity in the media.

If you have been getting this newsletter for any amount of time, you know how much I stress listening and watching all your interviews so you can learn to be better. So when do you stop? I say never.

The most powerful celebrity this year, according to Forbes, is Lady Gaga. Last week she announced how she studies all her performances.

She said, "I watched the Graham Norton performance when it aired. And I watched it over and over and over and over and over. And I looked at all the parts that I liked and all the parts that I didn't like... and I said, 'OK, maybe this part, if your breath control was different, and here, maybe you should try this step..."
Lady Gaga goes on to say that this is what will make her immortal as an artist.
She said, "I study everything that I do to become better all the time at my craft. The beauty for me about being an artist is that the dream will never die, because I'm not obsessed with material things and don't care about the money and don't care about the attention of the public, but only the love of my fans, so for me it's about how much more devoted, how much better an artist can I become."
OK so you’ve heard it from me, and now Lady Gaga.

2. Hot Topics For June.
Welcome to another month. It’s June. Here are a couple of hot topics for the month that should get you booked on the radio:

June is:

	Cancer From the Sun Month
	Country Cooking Month
	Entreprenurs Do-it-Yourself Marketing Month
	International Men’s Month
	National Smile Month
	Rebuild Your Life Month

Weekly events:

National Business Etiquette Week; June 6-12
	Men’s Health Week; June 13-19
Meet a Mate Week; June 19-25

How do you Piggyback off these stories? Here’s a great example:
June is Dog Lover's Month. Almost seven out of 10 pet owners talk to their pets on the telephone when they're not home. That's it...simple and a great hook!
For the complete list go to: http://www.brownielocks.com/june.html

3. June Story Ideas
Here are two Stories for you to piggyback off. I found these in the Daily Mail.
1) A man relies on his wife or girlfriend to buy more than half of his clothes, a study shows. While he is responsible for purchasing 30 percent of the items in his wardrobes, the woman buys 51 percent. The remaining percentage is made up of gifts from friends and family, according to a survey of 1,984 adults aged 18 to 50. Apparently women spend an average of two hours per month, 24 hours each year or 40 days in a lifetime shopping for clothes for their husbands and boyfriends. In comparison, men spend far less time picking out pieces of clothing -- 50 minutes a month on average or 16.6 days in a lifetime. (Daily Mail)

2) WE SPEND 36 MINUTES A DAY WORRYING: A new study shows that we waste 36 minutes every day worrying, which equates to nine days every year -- or a year and a half during a lifetime. The high cost of living, feeling 'stuck in a rut' and body weight, are the most common causes for concern. Four in ten are stressed about debt, a quarter are concerned they are 'not living life to the full' and one in five is troubled about family members falling ill. (Daily Mail)

How can you add to these stories??? If you are a fashion image consultant, do you have some advice for men who might not like the clothes being picked out by their partners?
Are you a life coach or someone who can help people cut stress in their life? If so, the 36 minute story is for you.
Don’t worry about being safe. Be different! Come up with a unique angle and the media will book you. If you need a hand, don’t hesitate to contact me.
I’ve helped thousands get booked everywhere…from their local radio station to Time magazine and Good Morning America.

1. Social Media. Radio. And the Royal Wedding

I have to admit, I didn’t get twitter when I started. It seemed like the biggest waste of time…ever. So I deleted my account. BUT my coach (Yes Tony, you were right) kicked my butt and forced me back on…and am I ever happy I returned. As a radio host, I’ve found twitter to be such a great guest-finding tool that I can’t believe it! Last Friday Morning we were on the air talking about ‘The Wedding’ when the thought hit me, “Is it a big deal to the “real” people in Britain?” So I went to twitter and Simon Jordan answered my tweet. Listen to how great he was on the air.

Sometimes your first crack at publicity won’t be with your topic at all. But you can still be ready to make a great impression. And Simon did just that.

Take a listen

http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/the-radio-show/wedding-simon

PS: Make sure you are my friend on Facebook and follow me on Twitter because that is a very easy way for you to get interviewed on a real radio show!
2. Tweet Talk Tuesday (On a Wednesday)
Tweet Talk Tuesday is a brand new feature we created where we look at the people behind the tweets. If you have over 100,000 followers, you must have something to say. This week I feature Jaden Hair. What a bonus she was! Jaden started her business 4 years ago and did exactly what I teach you to do to attract media. She has been featured on The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, ABC News Now…

Check out our interview on this week’s Tweet Talk Tuesday: http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/tweet-talk-tuesday/steamy-kitchen-tweet-talk-tuesday

Being a Radio Guy, I love having contests and games...so here's your challenge before we get to the newsletter... identify the song and the singer that I play for the 3rd story in the podcast and I'll send you my ebook "The Insiders Guide to Free Radio Publicity"

If You know the answer...be my friend on Facebook - (Link on the far right) and send me a private message! That easy!

OK, Let's get at it!

In this edition of the Podcast and Newsletter:

1. Sean Morey, The Comedian who Built an Empire using Radio!

2. Piggybacking gone Very Very Wrong...I think I'm going to be SICK!!!!!!!!

.

1. Comedian who Built an Empire using FREE Radio interviews!

Sean Morey is a very funny comedian who has become a loved friend of the media. Sean has created many great songs that have gone viral because of radio air-play.

He's been on the Tonight show and almost every radio station in North America.

Many comedians have no idea how to do radio interviews...but Sean is a master. I'm thrilled that Sean is my special guest discussing how he became so media friendly!

***LISTEN TO THIS IF YOU EVER WANT TO USE RADIO FOR PUBLICITY***

http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/radio-publicity/comedian-uses-radio-to-build-huge-audience

2. Piggybacking GONE VERY WRONG!
I always say if you want free publicity you need to piggyback off something that is going on in the media. Talk about the things we are already talking about.

Mothers Day is coming up next month…but this is not the way to piggyback. This is awkward…it’s so bad that I can’t help but share it!

Thanks to the Empress of PR, Wendy Kurtz for sharing this with me.
Pamper yourself or your mom with the comfort she deserves this Mother's Day. Life moves too quickly. Help rejuvenate your mom with a day at the spa, indulge her with chocolates and flowers, help her relax and slow down from her fast-paced world full of deadlines, commitments and obligations. And help her be more comfortable with Replens, A Long Lasting Vaginal Moisturizer.
We all know how busy a mom’s life can be but this Mothers Day take time to educate your mom about the treatment options available for vaginal dryness. Nearly every woman will experience vaginal dryness sometime in her life, oftentimes making even daily activities unbearable. It is most often associated with the normal decline or fluctuation of the female hormone estrogen. This fluctuation can be triggered by childbirth, breastfeeding or menopause. Dryness can also be caused by stress, certain medications, or excessive exercise.
This Mothers Day take time for yourself or time to educate a woman you love about vaginal dryness and Replens!
***Yes -This is a real media release as far as I can tell. NOPE: I will NOT be booking this interview…but I hope you smiled***

3. Honey…I think the Neighbors are Swingers
OK…I’ll bet I have your attention with that headline! And that’s good…because that’s the job of your media release: To be outrageous!

I didn’t make up that headline…it was sent to me last week.

Again, being a family friendly station I would never touch this topic…but I had to wonder how many Rock Stations booked the interview. It’s shocking AND it’s controversial.
Wonder why the neighbors are dressing sexy and going out every Saturday night? The topic of Swingers has been popping up a lot recently all over the media. It has been the topic of radio talk shows, radio programs, magazine articles, and even a couple of recent TV series. The top three occupations of members are, in order, #1 Teachers, #2 Doctors and #3 Law Enforcement.
I don't know about you, but all this information is going to make me look twice at the people attending my next PTA meeting.

.
1. Publicity Lesson Learned from my 13-year-old son.
This week I was in the radio studio when my son Brody called. The first thing out of his mouth when I answered: "Hi Dad. Is this a good time to talk?”

Brody knows hosts and producers are always busy, either meeting a deadline or getting ready for a live break, and I thought to myself, “This is a great reminder that most people never ask.” It’s soooo simple and yet it's probably something you have never been told.

So if you want to stand out and be exception in the eyes of anyone in the media...ask that simple question: “Is this a good time to talk?” and then pause and wait for the answer.

Thanks for the reminder Brody.
2. This PR Package Got Tom Booked Instantly
I received a PR package from my friend Adam Witty's Advantage Media Inc. and I was very impressed. Now to tell you why, we need to go back in history...

Years ago if you wanted on the air you would send a media kit that included a press release, a book, a bio etc. But for the past few years everyone has switched to email. And that works great for most people. But every once in awhile you get something that stands out.

Check the video of this package...very cool!

3. It’s April and Radio Needs YOU!
The easiest way to get publicity is to piggyback off something going on. Here’s a partial list of things happening in April. If you think you can talk on a topic but aren’t sure, just email me…I’ll let you know if it is a hook that can get booked or not. (No charge for asking)

	April Fool's Day; April 1st
International Pillow Fight Day; April 2nd
Masters Tournament (Augusta, GA, through April 10th); April 4th
One Day Without Shoes Day; April 5th
International Moment Of Laughter Day; 14th
Passover (begins at sundown the previous day, through April 25th); April 18th
Income Taxes Due (U.S.); April 18th
	Boston Marathon; April 18th
	Good Friday; April 22nd
	Earth Day (U.S.); April 22nd
	Easter; April 24th
Easter Monday (UK, Canada); April 25th
Administrative Professionals Day (formerly Secretary's Day); April 27th
Take Your Daughter To Work Day; April 28th
	Taxes Dues Canada; April 30th

For a complete list go to: www.BrownieLocks.com
4. Do You Have a Book?
If you have written a book and have never done a Radio, TV, or Newspaper interview…we NEED to talk. Don’t think…simply email me right now and say, “I’ve never done an interview!” I’ll see if we can create a Hot Media Hook for you…as a bonus for writing your book. Yup – No cost.

Everything I create is done with you in mind. If you don’t have a Hollywood Budget, it’s OK; we can still get you booked. I was surprised how many people purchased the interview Ebook package in my last newsletter…and to show you the results you can get…here’s what Sid just sent me:
Hi Wayne,

I'd almost completed reading your E Book and got a chance to go on a radio station based in the US Virgin Islands.

Turns out the Host loved my topic so he kept me on for several show segments (about an hour altogether). The cool thing is that I had bullet points from your E Book in front of me, which helped immensely.

I just did what you recommended on page 54 and will probably be asked back again because of it! I also booked myself another radio interview with a station in Ocean City next week.

This works and it's Fun!!
Thanks Sid, LOL, I know it works!

1. The worst Publicity Advice
A Client recently said to me, “I have heard from more than a few publicity experts that, when doing an interview, if the interview isn’t going as you want then it is important to hijack the interview and get your message across so when the interview is done you can feel good about getting your message out.”

I laughed and said, “Are you for real? Seriously? PR people say to do this?”

Not the good ones!

This is a BRUTAL idea and message.

It might work for Anne Coulter (American Conservative social and political commentator), but if YOU try it...you’ll be throwing your radio career down the tube!

Here’s how the show interviews work:

It’s MY show…so the Interview is done MY way. It’s that simple. If you don't play the way I want you to in MY sandbox...you WILL get the boot!

Can you imagine doing this to Bill O’Reilly? Howard Stern? Or…

They would rip you apart…and there would be no way for you to recover. PLUS, once they got rid of you they could CONTINUE slogging you if things turned really bad.

I can tell you for sure that when I get a sense of a radio guest not wanting to play properly and I feel like they are just there to drive traffic to their website or sell their book…I WILL GET THEM OFF THE AIR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.

As I’ve stressed MANY times, your goal with your first interview on a station SHOULDN’T BE to sell stuff, it should be to prove you are great and then get invited back again and again. That is where the magic really happens!

Before I move on…

Earlier I mentioned Anne Coulter…well even she can’t win them all. Listen to what happened when she called the Adam Corolla Radio show late, and tried to be snarky about it.

***BEWARE, this clip has some swearing at the end*** But I think it proves my point.

2. What works for Media
I was listening to the news this week. They did a story on a Canadian who wants to spend this year learning to live off products Made in Canada. There was a similar story in the USA, but we’ll focus on www.onecanadianoneyear.com

He will only watch Canadian TV, listen to Canadian Radio, buy Canadian furniture, wear Canadian clothes and so on…

So why did he get national publicity?

Because he won’t just be a one-time guest…he’s created a story the media can follow all year long. Every month, we can check in and see how he’s doing…or if he’s failed yet.

Getting media once is a good thing…getting media calling again and again…now that’s priceless!

3. Featured Experts
This week’s featured guest is Annette Bau from Millionaire Series. I worked with Annette a few years ago creating her publicity campaigns…and she has really become a star with the media. She is a regular on TV and Radio and has a very impressive résumé.

Enjoy Annette as she shares the success tips that she lives by at: www.52Motivationalinterviews.com/radio/

P.S. I am a featured guest for her Affluent Summit: Strategies for Marketing to the Affluent – YOU really should sign up…it’s absolutely free: http://AffluentSummit.com
4. Newsletter Special!
Does your website brag about you enough? People LOVE working with stars and celebrities…and yes, radio interviews can make you a star!

Let me interview you for your website. Often selling yourself can be difficult…so let me sell you for you….and make you the star in your field that people want to work with.

With my $97 Interview special you’ll have full rights to the audio. http://www.onairpublicity.com/2009/11/e-book/

1. Chicago Radio Producer Interview
What makes On-Air Publicity different than all other media coaches? — I am on the air every day Monday to Friday doing the morning drive! This gives me street credibility to connect with producers all over the planet. Every month I will bring you a media insider who can share interview information from their perspective.

This month I’m interviewing a Major Market producer and On-Air Personality from Chicago named Kassie.
Listen to our telephone chat.

Kassie tells you what makes a great interview, a bad interview, and what they look for in a guest before they’ll ever book you!

http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/radio-publicity/chicago-radio-producer
2. March Events to Get you Booked!
I’ve always said the easiest way to get booked for interviews is if you can talk about something relevant for the day. You have to matter…or else no one will care. Producers will always ask, “Why should we let you on the radio?”
Being able to piggyback off any national event answers that why.

Here is a list of some of the things happening in March that Media will book you on:

American Dietetic Association National Nutrition Month
	American Red Cross Month
	 Colorectal Cancer awareness month
	Employee Spirit Month
	Women's History Month (United States)
	International Expect Success Month
	Youth Art Month
	Spiritual Awareness Month
	Sing with your Child Month
	 Save Your Vision Month
	Optimism Month
	National Social Work Month

	Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras; March 8th
	Ash Wednesday; March 9th
	Nametag Day; March 10th
	Girl Scout Day; March 12th
Daylight Savings Time begins (FYI); March 13th
	 True Confessions Day; March 15th
	St. Patrick's Day; March 17th
International Goof Off Day; March 22nd
Make Up Your Own Holiday Day; March 26th
Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day; March 27th
Major League Baseball Opening Day; March 31st

All you will have to do is hit send!

This package also includes the 2011 Ebook and Insider Secrets to getting Fr.ee Radio Publicity.

PLUS, I will record a radio interview with you so you’ll have a demo in your hand proving you can do a great interview!

All of this for only $297 to the first four people who contact me!

LISTEN TO TODAY'S NEWSLETTER

1. Finding Radio Guests on Twitter and Facebook
As a radio host it's my job to always be scouting for content my listeners will find compelling. Being in Canada, snow is never a worry or problem for my life - if I'm not driving through it, I'm skiing on it! BUT when a huge snowfall hit Dallas in the days before the Superbowl...that was something big.

While thinking it would be a great little interview to talk about how Texas was dealing with the snow since they hardly ever get any, I was mystified about where I was going to find a guest since I was ALREADY ON THE AIR that Friday morning.

I immediately put the news out on Twitter and Facebook that I was looking for someone from Dallas.

Wendy Kurtz (The Empress of PR) follows my tweets and knew instantly that her client Carrie Wilkerson would be the perfect Texan for my show.

Once we were connected and live on the air, I was blown away by how great Carrie was with my co-host and I. She was laughing and telling stories and our 30-second check-in call actually lasted closer to 4 minutes. Carrie was that good...And my listeners loved her!

Even the program director came back to the studio to say what a great interview that was.

After the interview was done, Carrie sent me a note saying:

"interview was fun today!! would love to be considered a business, media or work at home 'go to resource' for you if you need one!"

Turns out Carrie is known as the Barefoot Executive and has a tremendous following online and she helps 10's of thousands of people build successful businesses from home.

Because she did such a great interview talking about snow in Texas you can bet she is now in my resource list.

My advice for you is to connect on Twitter and Facebook with all the media in your hometown. You never know when media will be looking for a last-minute guest and you might be the perfect person to fill that spot!

You can listen to our interview at:
http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/radio-publicity/found-a-great-guest-using-twitter

Oh, and don't forget to Connect with me on twitter and Facebook on my Blog and site - who knows, maybe you'll be our next interview on the radio.
2. So Many emails.I Finally Snapped!
You might remember last October I wrote about receiving multiple-mailing email pitches from PR firms and how some firms will promote anyone. Well I couldn't help myself - I counted the emails from one PR firm and guess what, I received 124 emails from that one PR firm in one month! How can this possibly be good for a client?

Having my own show, I get pitched from many different firms...but this one company is the worst I have seen. I got four to five emails a day pitching different clients. After two months I said, "Enough!" and asked them to remove me from their email list. Imagine - 124 emails in one month!

This is why I am such a proponent of doing your own publicity - Instead of media having to deal with mass emails, it's a huge advantage to send a personal email to a host/producer and work on getting booked on one show. In fact, the media will love you for it!

Some will bite, and some won't, but I can guarantee it is much better than spending $5000 to be crowded in amongst 124 emails from one firm. I bet I'm not the only producer and host who stopped reading their emails after a few days.
3. Last call for Group Media Training Class
This class is for you if you are an author, speaker or entrepreneur who really wants to:

Build a Brand starting in your own city and then spread it throughout the country.and beyond.
Build a List by knowing how to offer a deal at the end of the interview without sounding like an infomercial.

Let me show you how one person used the above list to create a media release. (I received this at my radio show this week):

In honor of February, National Pet Dental Health Month, Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a veterinarian and the chief medical officer of Banfield Pet Hospital, the world's largest veterinary network, with more than 750 locations across the country, is available to offer tips on how to identify dental disease and ways to prevent it.

This is Brilliant! It's relevant.plus it talks about one of the 5 magic morning radio topics. Pets!
2. Can you Help Super-mom?
You don't always have to create content for interviews...sometimes the content is there....all you need to do is provide the solutions! I bet we have a handful of people reading this newsletter that could help super-moms. Everyday your local newspapers are featuring stories like this:

'SUPER-MOMS' FEEL INADEQUATE: Research from the parenting website Netmums revealed that nine out of ten mothers constantly compare themselves with others, with 40 percent believing their fellow moms are better parents. Only one in four of the 5,000 mothers polled considered themselves to be better parents. But the constant pressure to appear to be supermoms is leading many to twist the truth, the survey revealed. Popular topics for white lies are parenting problems, financial difficulties, television watching and the amount of quality time spent with children or partners. (Daily Mail)

So here's my tip: what problems can you solve from today's newspapers?
3. NEW Group Training Class
I wanted to create a brand new Publicity Media Class that meets my high expectation for your success paired with a lower cost so real everyday people who have created books or businesses can get Publicity...and I hit the mark with this new program!

If you are an Author, speaker and entrepreneur who really wants to:

Build a Brand starting in your own city and then spread it throughout the country...and beyond,
Build a List by knowing how to offer a deal at the end of the interview without sounding like an infomercial,
Build a Relationship that has media calling you again and again, giving you thousands and thousands in media publicity,

Then this Training Class is for you!

Before the 4 weeks are up:

You will have a piping hot Media Release
You will know how to make A staggering number of Media Contacts
You will know how to get booked anywhere, anytime
You will know how to speak in sound bytes
You will know the secrets to building a huge database
You will have the confidence to be a great interview

And the Price will shock you!!! (I wanted to make sure that everyone could take advantage of Publicity on Radio, TV, and Print!)

There are a limited number of spaces. I keep the class sizes small so you get a ton of personal attention.

Here are the details:

1. Welcome 2011 – Are You Prepared to Fail?
Happy New Year! I love this time of year because I can get back on track with my goals and get to work on making the next year the best ever. BUT how do I know it will be the best? Because I wrote it out!

IF you want your dreams to come true this year they must start in writing.

I write out sales forecasts, client numbers, and podcast, Blog, and newsletter ideas…PLUS I write down what I will do to make my goals happen.

BUT what if things don’t work out as planned? Then what?

No worries – failure is all part of the success journey!

Don’t take my word for it…take Oprah’s:

Oprah Winfrey has admitted that she is prepared for the worst when it comes to her brand new network OWN -- The Oprah Winfrey Network. She told Entertainment Weekly, "I think we're going to have some perhaps rocky times with the channel, keeping people there and keeping people motivated to keep watching, keeping them engaged . . . Taking the responsibility of programming even the first 600 hours. It's a lot. And knowing that half of what we're doing is not going to work, then what? But it's an ongoing process, and I trust the process."

So if I’m reading this right…Oprah is prepared for a 50% failure rate in what’s on the air right now on the OWN.

So why are we so devastated when we fail? We need to learn from Oprah and know that some things will work and some won’t…it’s how fast you change, adapt and keep moving forward that really matters!

2. January – Resolution Radio
In radio, the end of December and the beginning of January are all about goals and resolutions. We get thousands of people pitching this topic. So what stood out this year? And who was my first pick for this topic?

Alan Goff from Achieving Goal Inc grabbed my attention by pitching what we are all doing wrong in our resolution settings.

It’s not the things we do right that cause us to fail…it’s the things we do wrong.

You can hear the interview at my Blog:

http://www.onairpublicity.com/blog/radio-publicity/alangoff
3. Super Surprise

Over the Christmas vacation I re-wrote my On-Air Publicity Insiders Secrets to Getting Free Radio Publicity Ebook. As a producer and radio host who gets pitched daily by the big PR firms of the world, I see what is happening in PR trends. And let me say, if you haven’t changed your PR approach in the last few years – you will be left behind…and you will struggle to get the Media to connect with you.

I even added a chapter about using social media to connect with media. Do this right and you’ll be successful. Do it wrong and you will get blacklisted!

BUT giving you step-by-step info on how to connect with the media in your town or city might not be enough…so I have supersized.

I want to feature YOU as my ‘Featured Expert’ at my brand new 52 Motivational Interviews Blog.

What will your clients think when they see you featured alongside Wayne Dyer, Robin Sharma, Jack Canfield, Nido Qubein, Sandra Yancey and many others?

Having your name listed alongside the experts on this Blog will give you Instant credibility.

1. Happy Stories.
‘Tis the season for happy stories. Food banks. Charity. Giving, helping and loving. All year long the news delivers bad news but this time of year we try to find the good in humanity. I recently saw a CNN story about a group of high school students who helped a member of their football team…a member who had suffered a spinal injury while playing football. Together they raised $96,000 for a new house that was wheelchair accessible.
Our radio station does a fundraiser for our local hospitals every year on the first Friday of December. This year we raised over $240,000 for our hospital foundation. Within this campaign we hear about heroes doing amazing things—from children who donate their piggy bank money…to families giving to charity instead of exchanging gifts that they maybe don’t need.
What’s your happy story? Do you know of a local hero who’s doing something great for others?
Let your media know. It’s the season of giving.

2. A comment to make listener’s call.
The best part about being on the radio is: my listeners are always there to make me feel better. This week on the air I made an off-handed comment that really got the phone ringing. What was the comment that made listeners call? –“I feel fat today!” Women called laughing because I was NOT the only man that’s ever made that comment. It turns out many listeners husbands also talk about feeling fat some days.
So why does this matter to you? It just goes to show you that sometimes the simplest comment can create a wonderful radio topic. We get requests for fitness experts all the time…but the ones who get on the radio are the ones who come up with something crazy like, “Is your man feeling fat and wishing for Spanx this Christmas?” Haha…That’s a great headline that will get you booked!
Make sure that while you have the crazy people (relatives) over for Christmas you pay attention to what they are complaining about…or discussing. You never know where your next great interview idea could come from.

3. Repo Man is Coming to Town.

That is it for my newsletter for 2010! Next week it's ski time, family time, and wife shopping time! Thank you for being a special part of my life, I look forward to getting you on the radio in 2011!!!
Merry Christmas from my family to yours!

1. Are You a Parenting Expert?
Would you be brave enough to do this? Justin Bieber is still just a teenager. The pop superstar, who travels with his mother on tour, has to follow the rules just like everyone else. The 16-year-old singer revealed on The Graham Norton Show that his mother recently shut off his mobile phone plan as punishment, revealing, "We got into an argument about something stupid, and she was like, 'Give me the phone', and I was like, 'No', so she just went and canceled it."

Bieber added, "Mom travels with me. We argue yes, I think every parent and son argue, but I love my mom. I think it's good she travels with me but sometimes I need a break because I'm with her 24/7, but I love her, I like being with her."

I LOVE this story! Would you ever just cancel your child’s cell? Well I will one up you and admit my teens don’t have cell phones. (And they tell me regularly that they are the only 2 teens on the planet without phones.)

Now while we are discussing parenting…how about Facebook? Have you checked what your children and their friends are posting? I recently called a parent to say his daughter had pictures of herself at a party drinking beer…oh and she’s only 15!!!!!!! Am I crazy for checking on my kids online activity or are most parents crazy for not caring?

This media story opens the door for so many radio interviews from parenting experts. Can YOU create something from this event?

Email the Wayne and Jayne show...we love having parenting help for our hockey-mom demo.
2. Catch Them by Surprise:
Barry Cohen knows how to do a great interview. He pitched a local radio show about being on the air. And when the radio host heard Barry was from Jersey he asked Barry to be on the radio to give his thoughts on “Real Housewives of New Jersey”. Barry accepted, promising to make it fun and entertaining for his listeners…but without telling the host how he planned to respond on the air. Take a listen to what Barry did!

4. My Favorite Christmas Things
One of my favorite musicians on the planet is Steven Curtis Chapman. His Christmas album is my favorite…and it’s what my family and I listen to EVERY year while decorating the tree.

5. Media Training for Authors and Experts
Get ready to make 2011 the year you get interviews, build your list and create the platform you have always wanted! Publishers need to know you have a platform.</itunes:summary>

1. Interview Tips to Sell Books NOW!…
Welcome to your biggest sales month!
November and December are GREAT months for authors.
BUT you can’t just sit back…you HAVE to get out there and talk about your book.
Yes, people are getting busy. Local media would love to have you on to talk about your book. But talking about your book isn’t about sounding like an infomercial. –It’s about showcasing yourself as an expert.
Here are some critical points while being on the air in Dec:

Never say, “In my book,” while doing the interview.
Use the name of your book. You need to brand it.
Be as helpful as possible and give as much real content in a 10-minute interview as you can.
Share stories about why you wrote the book. (A friend and client, Rabbi Ed, wrote his book about Prostate cancer because, when fighting for his life, he couldn’t find the information he desperately needed. Now he’s a top seller on Amazon for Prostate Cancer. This really showcases him as the expert—not only did he experience it, he researched the disease and is now helping others.)
And remember…don’t be shy about mentioning your book as a great Christmas gift. Donald Trump wouldn’t bat an eye about doing so and neither should you. This is your livelihood we are talking about.

2. Hot Topics for December…
Welcome to another exciting month…December, which means it’s:
World aids month
National write a business plan month
National tie month
Spiritual literacy month
Special weeks are:
National hand washing awareness week; Dec 6th –12th
Gluten-free baking week; Dec 19th –25th
And special days of note:
National cookie day; Dec 4th
International volunteer day; Dec 5th
National pawnbrokers day; Dec 6th
National salesperson day; Dec 10th
National chocolate covered anything day; Dec 16th
National re-gifting day ; Dec16th
Underdog day; Dec 17th
National whiners day; Dec 26th
These are just a few examples of piggyback stories for December. If you can connect with anything happening this month, let me know…I always need great guests for the Wayne and Jayne show!

3. Speeding Ticket
I Got A Speeding Ticket—my first in a long time. In fact, I haven’t had one in Canada since releasing this hit song and video! BUT my American cop friends…well, they just write me up anyway!

4. This Will Shock You
The absolute BEST time for you to book interviews is: Christmas Vacation.
While the rest of the world goes into holiday mode, radio and TV must go on. –The news, the Talk shows, the call in shows…they all continue on through the break and are desperate for great interviews.
Can you help?
If you want to book 5-10 interviews, email me and we’ll create a media package that will have the media calling you and booking you on the spot!
How do I know? –Because my Talk producer friends are already looking for people they can book at the end of the month.
Are you interested in my Super Low December Interview Special? If so, email me ASAP. I can only help 5 people…but the price will shock you.

5. Webinar: Branding with iTunes Dec 2
Struggling to get your books message out to others?
Are you reaching a big enough audience on the web?
Business podcasts are some of the most downloaded programs on the Internet. WHY? Because these days people are hungry for great content on the fly.
The Proof:
1.5 Million iPhone 4G’s sold the first day available
2 million iPads sold in the first two months of being on the shelf
273 Million iPods sold in the last 10 years (and that grows by millions per month)
Podcasting gives your clients, your potential clients AND your fans an OPPORTUNITY to learn from you and get to know you better while they’re jogging,</itunes:summary>

1. The Greatest Advice to Making Contact
How many emails are too many?

If you don't hear back when trying to connect with the media, it's OK to contact them again. In fact, because we in media get deluged with pitches, often that is the first weed-out opportunity we use...yes, we simply don't reply! You would be shocked at how many people never contact us again. (But It's A Secret Tool...And It Works.)

I've had people phone me, and leave a message (pitching a story idea), and then I ACCIDENTALLY hit delete and they are gone forever. So sometimes it truly IS an accident and I Would Have booked them…but I never hear back...

The greatest advice to making contact is to use ALL your resources…not just once, but multiple times. Email, Phone, and yes, even Fax. (The exception is if they reply saying they are NOT interested—then DON'T keep pitching...wait until you have another topic.)

And finally, NEVER ever just randomly add the media to your newsletter or mailing list. This is a sure fire way to be banned for life!

LISTEN TO The PODCAST!

1. She called me LIVE!
This week on my radio show we were in the midst of doing an air survey when I answered line #5 with, ”You’ve got the Wayne and Jayne show.”
A Lady says, ’”Ummm, Hi. I’m Sheila and I’m going to be doing a reading of my new book at the library tonight at 7.”
I say, “Great, Sheila, I’m happy you called but you are live on the air.”
(You could FEEL her embarrassment.)
But when you call the Wayne and Jayne show we always want to help out, so I quickly said, “Sheila, are you a new author?”
She said, “Yes”
So I said, “Please call us back so we can do a real interview with you and tell our listeners about you and your book. And before you leave, please tell us again where you’ll be so we can come see you.”
…And she did.
“OK, now back to our original survey.” I continued…
So what would you have done?
What do you think Sheila did?
Can you believe she didn’t follow up?!! –Even after being told LIVE on the air that we were going to interview her just because she had the guts to call us…never mind that it was live…but she picked up the phone and called!
Most people are frozen by fear and will never take the step to tell the media about what they do.
Well, Sheila never called back nor did she follow up. That’s sad.
You will ALWAYS get media in your local town. Yes, ALWAYS!
Want to know how? (Check out my latest training at the bottom of this email.)
Being a local gal, Sheila has many friends and contacts that would have bought her book—just because she’s their friend. She easily passed up $2,000.00 in sales by not getting back to us…
How’s that for motivation to call your local media!

2. Featured Guest of the Week
We are a family friendly radio show. So when Kim pitched me about a topic on sex, my first reaction was, “Nah. I think I’ll pass.” BUT I booked her anyway—I knew she’d be on Morning TV and had been on radio.
The morning of our interview she wrote asking if she could say the word “masturbation.” (Last time a ‘sex-pert’ was on our show she talked about “orgasms”…and we sure heard about it from the GM!)
But this time, after we finished the interview with Kim the PD flew into our studio raving about what a homerun we just hit and this was exactly what our listeners need to hear…I thought the PD was going to throw us a parade she was so excited with how the topic had been handled! LOL!
So Kim will be back for a monthly feature and is now The Wayne and Jayne show sex-pert!

•	How to pitch them
•	How to be a great interview

1. The WORST thing a media guest can do
The absolute worst thing you can do, as a guest of ANY media, is to miss your interview time—Do this and you will never get booked again.
There is nothing worse than telling my radio listeners I have a great guest coming on that they do not want to miss…and then the guest misses the time…and the listeners feel as if they’ve been strung along for no reason…and I’m left scrambling to fill in with something else.
That almost happened to me last week.
Luckily the guest had taken my class and knew the steps to take to ensure we connected: She sent me her backup phone number! It turned out the phone company was having major problems so my guest’s office line rang busy.
If she hadn’t sent me the back up number I would have thought she was on the phone and was missing our call—an easy way to never get invited back on the Wayne and Jayne show…EVER!

2. November is…
…Another great month of Interview possibilities for authors and experts!
I always say you need to link your topic to something going on.
Here are few Monthly observances for November:

	National Diabetes Month
	Banana Pudding Lovers Month
	Diabetic Eye Disease
	Family Stories Month
	Lung Cancer awareness
	Military family appreciation
National adoption month…tie this in with Celebrity adoption
	Alzheimer’s Disease
	National Pet Cancer awareness

I’ll have more great interview possibilities next week!

3. Featured Guest of the Week
What is one of the great benefits of getting the On-Air Newsletter? — By reading this newsletter you have an opportunity to get booked for my radio show.
Yes, last week I booked five guests for Halloween week!
On Wednesday I interviewed the Story Lady about scary dreams. We met because she is a reader of the on air Publicity newsletter. She followed my PR advice and ended up on my morning radio show. Listen to our Interview here:

4. Media Training for Authors and Experts

The Final Media Training of 2010 starts November 16, 2010.
You need to know how to book yourself interviews…but more importantly, I’ll show you how to get interviews any time you want, show you how to create your own media release any time you want, show you how to do great interviews that always drive traffic to your website, show you how to NEVER get banned…and much, much more.

1. Three Simple Success Secrets
When booking radio interviews, your website ABSOLUTELY matters. Do you wonder why I have this in my newsletter? It’s because I am NOT booking guests who have really bad websites! WHY? Because if your website is bad, I assume that you are not put together as a business professional.

These days you need three simple things to be a success in the media.

(I am not counting your value or your topic in the list…I think that goes without saying!)

Have a website. A website gives you credibility. It shows you are serious about marketing yourself. Make it professional…but make it simple—The more elaborate the site, the more difficult the navigation. Most hosts/producers are busy and don’t need to sit through long flash presentations. (Often their computers are too old to even operate that fancy stuff!)

Maximize your availability. If you are new to the radio business and want to make waves you will have to be as readily available as possible. As you become more popular, the pickier you can be. But remember, all popular fads die out and you may need radio again…so don’t burn too many bridges by saying, “Oh you’re too small of a market for me.” When you pitch radio, hosts want to know if you are available as a last-minute guest. (It happens all the time—a guest misses his time slot and if we don’t have a back up we can be left hanging.)

Be reliable. If you are slotted for a 7:15 interview, call in at 7:10. Many stations are so tight with their format each morning that they schedule guests for a tight, two-minute interview at 8:28 with news coming at 8:30. You don’t want to miss your time slot – EVER! This makes a host feel like they strung along their listeners and then didn’t deliver!

2. My Halloween Line-Up
Thanks to everyone who pitched me for this Halloween week. (I ended up booking three guests who receive this newsletter.)

1. The Story Lady, who is on this morning, talking about scary dreams.

2. A real life Dr. Doolittle answering, “Has your pet has seen a ghost?”

3. A Ghost Buster/ Ghost Whisperer who ‘moves ghost over’.

I’ll feature their interviews in the next few weeks.
3. They Laughed at My Halloween Costume
I thought I had the perfect costume but listen to what happened when I called the costume shop to rent it.

4. Upcoming Teleclasses

1. How Many NEW people learned about you this week?
How many new people learned about you and your services this week?

I see many PR and media coaches touting that you can make millions by getting radio and TV publicity. Unfortunately…it just doesn’t happen. –You don’t hire a PR firm for ten grand and have them get you on the top 20 shows in America…and then you sell a ton of books or programs.

If you go into the world of PR with that attitude, you will be disappointed!

Your focus should be on telling everyone what you do and THEN giving them a reason to come to your website or your book signing…and then you can sell them.

They have to like you.

They have to see you solving a problem for them. Do THAT…and you will be rewarded.

I know of people who’ve been on Oprah and didn’t make any money at all! And I know of others who’ve been on one small market radio show and sold two cases of books.

Your goal should be to have an interview on at least one radio show per week.

There are hundreds and hundreds of stations that have 100,000 listeners. Multiply that by 50 weeks…and you’ll have had 5 million people learn about what you do. And if only 1% take action and sign up for your newsletter or download a free gift from you, that’s 50,000 new people that you can add to your list.

Do this for a year and something magical will happen to your interviews…you will become stronger and deliver better content in a friendlier way…which could lead to maybe 2% of listeners checking you out.

That’s when doors start opening to the top shows in America and the magic begins and you finally get taken seriously!
2. Interview Challenge
Next week radio stations will be booking guests for Halloween. Do you have a great topic for Halloween? I’ve already booked Val Heart for Thursday on the Wayne and Jayne show. Her topic is: pets and ghosts! Now that’s a winner if I ever heard one!

I do have more openings for the right topic…so send me your pitch ASAP. If it fits with The Wayne and Jayne show and my listeners, you’ll be booked for a live spot.
3. BBC’s Guest of the Day
Last week I shared Maddy’s success story on landing an interview with the BBC. Listen to how he didn’t let his negative upbringing in a very poor neighborhood in India stop him from moving to the UK to build a great life and now coach others on how to live better while overcoming obstacles.

And recently I featured Maddy on my Radio show’s Motivational Monday segment. Enjoy the interview at

4. Want to be the Next Success Story?

If you have a message that can help people…radio shows, podcasts, TV, magazines, and media from around the world would LOVE to interview you.

I have a couple of openings for 1-on-1 media training. Let’s discuss your goals and see if we are a fit. I’ve helped clients get interviews on:

Time Magazine, Good Morning America, Dr. Laura, Oprah and Friends, BBC, CBC, TV shows in Vancouver, Toronto, Houston, and more, Star Magazine, Fox and Friends, and hundreds of radio shows around the world.

Would you like to be next???

That’s it for another edition of the On-Air Newsletter. If you enjoyed The On-Air Publicity Newsletter, please feel free to forward it to friends and colleagues.

Until next week,

Keep your radio on and loud!!
