1. Finding Radio Guests on Twitter and Facebook

As a radio host it’s my job to always be scouting for content my listeners will find compelling. Being in Canada, snow is never a worry or problem for my life – if I’m not driving through it, I’m skiing on it!  BUT when a huge snowfall hit Dallas in the days before the Superbowl…that was something big.

While thinking it would be a great little interview to talk about how Texas was dealing with the snow since they hardly ever get any, I was mystified about where I was going to find a guest since I was ALREADY ON THE AIR that Friday morning.

I immediately put the news out on Twitter and Facebook that I was looking for someone from Dallas.

Wendy Kurtz (The Empress of PR) follows my tweets and knew instantly that her client Carrie Wilkerson would be the perfect Texan for my show.

Once we were connected and live on the air, I was blown away by how great Carrie was with my co-host and I.  She was laughing and telling stories and our 30-second check-in call actually lasted closer to 4 minutes.  Carrie was that good…And my listeners loved her!

Even the program director came back to the studio to say what a great interview that was.

After the interview was done, Carrie sent me a note saying:

“interview was fun today!! would love to be considered a business, media or work at home ‘go to resource’ for you if you need one!”

Turns out Carrie is known as the Barefoot Executive and has a tremendous following online and she helps 10’s of thousands of people build successful businesses from home.

Because she did such a great interview talking about snow in Texas you can bet she is now in my resource list.

My advice for you is to connect on Twitter and Facebook with all the media in your hometown. You never know when media will be looking for a last-minute guest and you might be the perfect person to fill that spot!

Oh, and don’t forget to Connect with me on twitter and Facebook on my Blog and site – who knows, maybe you’ll be our next interview on the radio.

2. So Many emails.I Finally Snapped!

You might remember last October I wrote about receiving multiple-mailing email pitches from PR firms and how some firms will promote anyone. Well I couldn’t help myself – I counted the emails from one PR firm and guess what, I received 124 emails from that one PR firm in one month!  How can this possibly be good for a client?

Having my own show, I get pitched from many different firms…but this one company is the worst I have seen.  I got four to five emails a day pitching different clients.  After two months I said, “Enough!” and asked them to remove me from their email list.  Imagine – 124 emails in one month!

This is why I am such a proponent of doing your own publicity – Instead of media having to deal with mass emails, it’s a huge advantage to send a personal email to a host/producer and work on getting booked on one show. In fact, the media will love you for it!

Some will bite, and some won’t, but I can guarantee it is much better than spending $5000 to be crowded in amongst 124 emails from one firm.  I bet I’m not the only producer and host who stopped reading their emails after a few days.
