1. The October Challenge Winner is

Last week, I issued a challenge about making your topic relevant to something going on this month.  Congratulations to Jan Jansen for meeting the challenge! She was so perfect for my audience that I didn’t just interview her for this newsletter and podcast…I also had her call in to my radio show as a special guest to talk about Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Jan shared secrets about Breast health that Doctor’s don’t even know! Enjoy her interview.

2. Good, Bad or Ugly?

As usual, when I entered the studio this morning I opened email—I had 4 emails from the same PR firm pitching 4 different interviews. The first was sent at 4:44am and the last at 5:03am. (I’m seeing such multiple-mailings more and more often…and it’s coming across like desperation!)

But does more equal better?

Nope!!

It shows us in the Media that some PR firms will promote anyone…and they’ll pitch us over and over and over hoping a few stations will pick up their people for interviews.

Now here’s where the real problem lies: Both the Program director and the afternoon host received the same emails from this firm and commented on how they are now simply deleting these emails before opening them because it is just too much.

Now, how bad is that?!

Here’s innocent you—you’ve hired a firm to get you interviews…and producers around the country are just deleting emails with your information. That’s opening up opportunities for people who are, on their own, pitching themselves to the media.

Show us you are a real person who has taken the time to pitch us…and we will appreciate it!  (YES! –and most of us will read it.)

So for the pitch firms who want to send out a ton of ideas instead of one or 2 great interviews…good bad or ugly…today my vote is for bad.

3. From Despair to BBC’s Guest of the Day

Do you always have to relate your interview idea around a current event or pop culture?  No.  Sometimes you are the story.  At the end of last week’s newsletter I introduced you to Madhur Mulhotra, my latest client from the UK.  Madhur has an amazing story. Within my newsletter during the next few weeks, I will be sharing his interview and story.

For those of you following my newsletters, you know I teach by example and real work—my clients get out of the textbooks and get their hands dirty with real world PR challenges. For Madhur’s homework last week he stopped into a radio station for a tour.  As he was taking the tour someone cancelled the noon spot and Madhur was asked if he could fill in as the special guest for a live interview…yes, for that very afternoon!  Well, he did it and ended up getting 15 minutes on the air.

And then guess what happened again…yesterday?

Madhur Pitched the BBC, and while in contact with the BBC producer they found out they had a cancellation. And guess who they booked right then and there?

Yup, Madhur was the Guest of the Day on the BBC!  He stayed on for 2 segments and received 12 minutes of Publicity for his new book and his coaching business.

Once off the air, the host, the producer and the engineer all raved about how great Maddy was on the air.  So guess who will be back on the air!

Oh…and guess what having the BBC on your website and resume does for other media?  It makes you a star!

Congrats Maddy!

I’ll share his interview next week.

4. Want to be the Next Success Story?

5. Fun on the Radio

Are you a good driver??? A new survey says 89% of people would fail their learners test if they had to do it all over again.

I was laughing about this survey until I took the test – listen to what happened.

Is sex better after age 40?

A new survey came out…and I just HAD to ask my listeners who are over 40, if this was true or not.

(But the most important question was asked of my wife LIVE ON THE AIR. What was her answer? Well, what was the question for that matter? …)
